Trail Description

Located in the Hickory Creek Savannah Unit, this trail is fully accessible with two loops. The outer loop is 1.6 miles and the inner loop is 0.8 miles. Both loops are accessible; the inner loop is mostly boardwalk. Known as a primary area for wildflowers from late spring through summer, you can see pitcher plants and sundew--both carnivorous.

There are eight trails in the Preserve totaling more than 45 miles. The longest is 18 miles while the shortest is less than one quarter mile. A few of our trails are fully accessible. Please use caution during the summer months when temperatures and humidity readings are higher than normal. Hike only during the early morning or late afternoon hours.

Pets are allowed in Big Thicket National Preserve provided that visitors abide by the following regulations or restrictions:

1. Pets must be restrained on leashes no longer than six ( 6 ) feet in length ( 1.8 meters ).

2. Pets are prohibited at any special event or program open to the public and in all areas designated for hunting, trapping, and camping during times established for these activities.

Directions: From Beaumont, TX, Seven miles north of Kountze, Texas, take FM 420 east for 2.5 miles to the Information Station for your personal orientation.

Description

A booklet guides you around a 1 mile (1.6 km) loop through an open longleaf pine/wetland savannah. The Sundew Trail is a premier area for wildflowers from late spring through summer.

Directions

Located at the eastern edge of the Hickory Creek Savannah Unit, one-half mile (0.8 km) south of FM 2827. The dirt road leading to the trailhead intersects FM 2827 a half mile west of US 69.

Highlights

Hiking is a great way to get deep within the Big Thicket. The different trails traverse a variety of plant communities and provide an overview of the diversity of Big Thicket National Preserve.
