Trail Description

South Branch Mountain Trail carries you to two separate summits. The first summit is South Branch, elevation 2,630 and the second is Black Cat, elevation 2,611. The trail is well marked with blue-blazes. It begins by following a small creek then ascending a ridge offering good views of the Traveler Range area. The trail continues to ascend to reach the first peak. Trail conditions between the two summits is fairly good and not particularly strenuous. About 3 miles into the trail, it takes a sharp turn northeast to reach Upper South Branch Pond Picnic and Campsite Area. This is where Pog Notch intersects and heads south to reach the Mt. Katahdin / Russell Pond Campground area.

Directions: From Matagamon Gate, Baxter State Park, This area is located in the desolate northeastern area of the park. After passing the gate, travel the park road west to Trout Brook Crossing Picnic Area. Head south to dead-end at the South Branch Pond Campground. Trail begins on the west side of the pond.
