Description

The trail leads through areas where prescribed burns have been conducted. Hikers will see superb views into the depths of Redwood Canyon.

Directions

From Fresno, proceed east on State Highway 180 for 53 miles, to The Wye-the junction of northbound State Highway 180 and eastbound Generals Highway. Bearing right at that junction, drive east 3.5 miles to the junction of a northbound Sequoia National Forest road (signed for Hume Lake) and, a southbound Kings Canyon National Park road, and turn right (south)--a sign here reads "Kings Canyon National Park."

Follow this dusty and often-narrow dirt road for 1.9 miles to Redwood Saddle. Turn left here and proceed for .1 mile to the trailhead parking area, shaded by gargantuan Sequoias.

Highlights

The Redwood Mountain Loop Trail travels through forests of Giant Sequoias, white firs and sugar pines. The trail leads through areas where prescribed burns have been conducted. Hikers will see superb views into the depths of Redwood Canyon, east to the sheer granite of Big Baldy Ridge, and southeast to the alpine peaks of the Great Western Divide. One can briefly spy the lookout-capped dome of Buck Rock. It's possible to take a 2.75 mile detour to see Hart Tree, the tallest known Giant Sequoia.
