Trail Description

Possum Hill Loop trail is located in a noncontiguous area of White Clay Creek State Park. The red-blazed trail is 2 miles in length offering trailhead parking and a chemical toilet. Encircled by roads, occasional sounds of traffic penetrate the forest and field. In spring, hikers will be rewarded with colorful blossoms, busy with bees and butterflies while the woodland comes alive with the sounds of songbirds. Several small climbs and descents are encountered, typical of Delaware's piedmont region. At the one-mile point, a scenic creek view is offered and at 1.5 mile, hikers must cross two streams. Note that a short trail cuts across this area of White Clay allowing either a shorter hike or an extended journey.

Directions: From Newark, DE, Travel Paper Mill Road approximately 1.5 miles north to where SR 72 joins. Travel another mile north on Paper Mill Road. Turn left (west) onto Smill Mill Road. About 0.3 mile is trailhead parking on the left.

The well-marked trail is located in a noncontiguous area of White Clay Creek State Park. Trailhead parking and chemical toilet available.
