The best way to reach Lookout Louise, Greenstone Ridge's Trailhead and the crest of a remarkable outcropping, is by canoe. (Rentals available at Rock Harbor.) Paddle across Tobin Harbor reaching Hidden Lake dock at approximately 1 mile. Dock the boat and follow the shoreline trail through what is known as "good" moose habitat. The trail evolves from swampland to a steep woodland rise that further evolves to a huge boulder-strewn area that boasts Monument Rock. As the trail sweeps by Monument Rock views of Tobin Harbor unfold to the south. The trail greets Greenstone Ridge Trail junction in about 0.5 mile affording a sharp ascent for 0.1 mile to Lookout Louise. From the junction with Greenstone Ridge, Mt. Franklin and Lane Cove trails lie 4.8 miles west. Lane Cove is a favorite among backpackers in search of a quiet trail with a rewarding destination. The approximate 2 mile northbound hike takes hikers to Five Fingers with views that include small fiords and tiny islets. From Lookout Louise, views to the east are Duncan Bay, views northwest include Five Finger Bay and Belle Harbor, and due west are that of Greenstone Ridge.

The most enjoyable and safest method for exploring Isle Royale National Park is by carrying a compass and a trail map. Maps are available at all Isle Royale visitor centers.

Directions: From Rock Harbor, Technical hikers either begin on Tobin Harbor Trail (access trail near Rock Harbor Lodge) or begin by paddling to Hidden Lake Dock.

Lookout Lousie Trail, in addition to being the official start of Greenstone Ridge, offers some of the best views along the island's eastern ridge.
