Trail Description

The John Muir Trail #152 is an easy to moderately difficult 19.9 mile trail. This National Recreation Trail begins at the Childers Creek Parking Lot neat Reliance and ends on FDR #311 in Monroe County near Farner. The trail follows the Hiwassee State Scenic River with access to several recreation sites along the way. Parking is available at Chiders Creek, Big Bend, Towee, Powerhouse Boat Launch, Coker Creek Trail junctions, Hwy. 68 and FDR #311.

Directions: From Etowah, Travel south on Hwy. 411 to the junction of Hwy. 30. Turn east on Hwy. 30 to Reliance. Turn left onto Hwy. 315 and cross the Hiwassee River and take the first right (after crossing railroad tracks.) Continue on Childers Creek Road to the Childers Creek Parking Lot on the right.

Description

This National Recreation Trail begins at the Childers Creek parking lot near Reliance and ends on FDR #311 in Monroe Country near Farner. The trail follows the Hiwassee State Scenic River with access to several recreation sites along the way. Parking is available at Childers Creek, Big Bend, Towee, Powerhouse Boat Launch, Coker Creek Trail junction, Highway 68 and FDR #311.

Directions

From Etowah, take Highway 411 south to the junction to Highway 30. Turn east on Highway 30 to Reliance. Turn left onto Highway 315 and cross the Hiwassee River and take the first right (after crossing railroad tracks).

Highlights

This National Recreation Trail follows Hiwassee riverbank and traces part of route of naturalist John Muir's 1,000-mile walk to Gulf of Mexico in 1867.
