The Italian Bar Trail is a very difficult 2.25 mile, lightly used trail at an elevation of 5,400 feet. This is an old trail, which was used by miners to reach the North Fork of the American River. It is steep with short sections of 35 % slopes. As you start down the trail there is a spectacular view up the canyon. Yo need to be careful of the poison oak, which begins about halfway down the trail. The trail ends at the river, but it is possible to travel up and down the river by scrambling along the riverbank.
Directions: From I-80, Take the Foresthill exit and proceed 15.5 miles on Foresthill Road to the Foresthill Ranger Station. Continue 15.3 miles from the Ranger Station, turn left on to Humborg Ridge Road (Forest Road #66) and proceed to the trailhead. There is no road sign coming from Foresthill so keep your eyes open.
