Helpful Hints

By Travel Expert: Bill Weir
Rating:
  • Look for arches inside the Fiery Furnace. There's at least one natural bridge as well.
  • Ranger-led hikes go in the summer season.
  • Dead ends, drop offs, and ridges make straight-line travel impossible.

Description

A maze of closely spaced sandstone fins form narrow canyons that can be fun to explore. It's easy to get lost! The name comes from the colors of the rock, especially intense at sunrise and sunset. The shaded recesses are actually a cool place to be in summer. Rangers lead tours inside. If you go on your own, you'll need to obtain a permit and learn about how to visit without damaging the soft sandstone. Try to sign up in advance for either the tour or a self-guided walk. Both tours and permits have a fee.
