Cone's Dike Trail begins near the visitor center off Jackson's Gap Trail. The hike is an 8.25 mile hike or bike ride along a lovely old earthen dam created by 20th century cattle ranchers. The dike incises the prairie offering an up close view of the mixed forest and marshland. This is one of the park's longest trails and offers a good opportunity to view the abundant wildlife including sandhill cranes, egrets, herons, white-tailed deer, wild turkey, bobcat, and gray fox. Be sure to keep an eye out for the wild horses that roam the Preserve. These animals are descendants from the Spanish settlers.
Directions: From Gainesville, FL, Travel south on Interstate 75. Take exit 75 heading east to U.S. Highway 441. Travel north a short distance to reach the preserve. Hike the Jackson's Gap Trail from the visitor center parking lot east bound to reach Cone's Dike.
This earthen trail is a 8.25 mile round-trip hike leading to the center of the prairie.
