Helpful Hints

By Travel Expert: Alistair Wearmouth
Rating:
  • This is Cunningham Falls State Park's most strenuous and enjoyable hike, with good views of the surrounding countryside as well as access to the park's namesake falls at the beginning or end of the loop.
  • The trail can get busy during peak fall foliage season, so plan on visiting during the week to get more of the scenery to yourself.
  • You can cool off after your hike in Hunting Creek Lake, which has three designated swimming areas.

Description

This strenuous 7.5-mile hike includes breathtaking views and passes two scenic rock outcrops with views of the surrounding Piedmont region. Some rock scrambling is required. Many acres of hardwood trees were harvested during the 1800s to produce charcoal for the operation of the Catoctin Iron Furnace. The large, flat "charcoal hearths" can still be seen in the mountains. Cat Rock provides excellent views of fall foliage in the surrounding Catoctin Mountains. Bob's Hill has an elevation of 1,765 feet and provides views to the north and south.
