Helpful Hints

Rating:
  • You can turn this 22-mile path winding through Cape Cod into a hike or bike of any length you choose. The center of the path is paved, but a wide shoulder offers softer trekking for hikers and equestrians. Bike rentals are available.
  • Cruise the heart of the cape past ponds, small streams, and even through Nickerson State Park on the trail that connects several hamlets.
  • For extra mileage, add on the Old Colony Trail, which runs east-west from the south terminus of the Cape Cod Rail Trail.

Description

The Cape Cod Rail Trail follows a former railroad right-of-way for 22 miles through the towns of Dennis, Harwich, Brewster, Orleans, Eastham and Wellfleet. Its paved surface, few hills, and well-marked automobile crossings make it ideal for cyclists, and the trail accommodates horseback riding, walkers, and runners. Pine woods, salt marshes, cranberry bogs and freshwater ponds are some of the terrains encountered on the trail, and Nickerson State Park (official trailhead) which is close to the half-way point, provides camping, hiking and biking trails, swimming, fishing and boating.
