Helpful Hints

By Travel Expert: Jeremy Pataky
Rating:
  • This nine-mile round trip hike is straightforward but strenuous. Seeps from the ground along the trail provide drinkable water for much of the summer, though it's a good idea to take enough with you for the hike.
  • Maps and trail information are available in Kennecott at the National Park Service visitor center beside National Creek.
  • The undisturbed feeling of this old mine site and the structures there is rare, especially coupled with views as dramatic as those you'll find here of the Kennecott and Root Glaciers and the mountains.

Description

The Bonanza Mine Trail is a strenuous, eight-mile climb starting at the turnoff near Kennecott. After the mostly level road grows steep and rocky, the path begins to narrow; cyclists may wish to walk their bike up the hill. Approximately one mile from the trail's end, the road steepens dramatically and forks in several different directions. All routes lead to the ridgetop, where hikers are rewarded with great views to the north and of the mine ruins directly below.
