This trail begins near Sheriff Reservoir, west of Yampa. The trailhead is located just opposite the Sheriff Reservoir Dam. The first mile follows an old logging road as it winds through a large meadow. The trail has some short steep sections as it heads toward Windy Gap, looking into the Bunker Creek drainage to the west and the Trout Creek drainage to the east. Baldy Trail, #1200 heads off to the northwest from this area. At mile 2.5, the highest point on the trail at 11,125 feet, the trail enters the Flat Tops Wilderness. The trail then enters the East Fork of the Williams Fork drainage and later begins a steep decent to the East Fork Trail, #1119. The East Fork Trail can be followed either north toward Pyramid and Forest Highway 16, or south toward Stillwater Reservoir and Forest Road 900.

Directions: From Yampa, Travel W/NW on County Rd 17 approximately 5 miles to County Road 132/FH 16. Turn left and go about 9 miles to FDR 959/960. Go south on FDR 959/960 about 3 miles to Sheriff's Reservoir . The trail begins just across from the dam.
The Black Mountain Creek Trail is located in the Flat Tops west of Yampa. It leads from Sheriff Reservoir to the East Fork Trail #1119.
