The Black Locust Trail is a black-blazed moderate to easy walk that explores 3.3 miles of steep slopes mixed with level areas. The trail showcases the beauty of the park from its wooded slopes to the breathtaking views of both Frederick Valley to the east and Middletown Valley to the west. The trail is open to mountain bikers and equestrians as well as hikers. The Sierra Club, Catoctin Chapter, maintains this particular trail.
Directions: From Frederick, MD, Travel north about 5 miles along U.S. Highway 41 turning right onto Gambrill State Park Road. Follow the road for a little over 1 mile to reach the designated Trailhead Lot on the right. All trails begin from this lot, including the long-distance Catoctin Trail.
Varied terrain and scenic views are the rewards of Black Locust Trail.
