Helpful Hints

  • This is one of the best mountain-bike rides in the Ozarks, with a near-continuous loop of solid singletrack that will keep you riding hard for about four hours. Be sure to carry tools and spares, as it's a long walk back to the trailhead if your rig bites it.
  • The Berryman Trail is a moderately challenging three- to four-day hike, with good camping at designated sites and beside freshwater springs along the way. Experiencing it at this pace will also allow you to enjoy the surroundings without quite so many gravel-crunching ambushes from the fat-tire crowd.

Description

The Berryman Trail starts at Berryman Campground, the site of a Civilian Conservation Corps camp, and traverses 24 miles of scenic Ozark countryside. It winds through timbered stands of oak, pine, and bottomland hardwood, climbing switchback fashion from low bottoms to high cherty ridges. Interesting flora and fauna abound in the old fields, glade-like rock outcroppings, and deep forest. Trail users are insured a measure of solitude and quiet, as motor vehicles are prohibited on the trail. Mountain bikes are permitted; however, users must yield the right-of-way when encountering horseback riders. That portion of the trail from just west of the Berryman Recreation Area to just south of Harmon Springs is also part of the Courtois Section of the Ozark Trail.

Directions

The trail starts at Berryman Campground in the Potosi Ranger District, the site of a Civilian Conservation Corps Camp of the same name from 1937 till the onset of World War II.

Highlights
