  • Missouri's Taum Sauk might get the plaudits as the state's highest point at 1,772 feet, but this strenuous hike offers great unimpeded views from its rocky summit, as well as a real taste of unsullied wilderness.

Description

Hike to the top of 1,702-foot Bell Mountain, one of Missouri's highest points, on the Bell Mountain Trail. This 12-mile round trip passes through the Bell Mountain Wilderness Area, a 9,000-acre pocket of oak-hickory forest and pristine Ozark streams. From the top you'll get an uninterrupted view of the surrounding area, most likely all to yourself. And with a 1,700-foot vertical rise, this hike will put you through your paces.

Directions

Start out going West on US-50 W towards BROADWAY by turning right. Turn LEFT onto BROADWAY. Turn LEFT onto US-50 E. Turn RIGHT onto US-63. Stay straight to go onto I-44 LOOP. Turn LEFT to take the I-44 EAST ramp. Merge onto I-44 E.

Highlights

Backpacking, birdwatching, photography, and wilderness camping are some of the many features on this wild trail.

Trail Dangers                                                                                                      There is NO source of water on the Bell Mountain loop trail. Pack plenty of water if attempting this trail.

Ferrell Hogs, Black Bear and Coyote are known to be in the area and are dangerous. Store ALL food in a bear sack, hung from a tree away from your campsite, to avoid any unwanted visitors.

Bell Mountain has rugged terrain and require good foot wear. The trail recommended for more experience hikers who have a knowledge of orienteering. The  trail is unmarked and there are many illegal bushwack trails that make it difficult to stay on the main trail.
