Bear Caves - Mount Seneca Trail is a loop trail 4 miles in length and offers the curious hiker plenty of exploring opportunity. From the outset, the trail offers cave openings with narrow passages. Flashlights are a welcome accompaniment in this boulder strewn area. Once inside the caves, one must stoop and squeeze through slender corridors. The trail continues to climb a number of large rocks only to descend alongside the boulders. The treetops are a canopy of maple, oak and hemlock while the forest floor is covered with mossy rocks and varies species of fern. Slide Hollow must be crossed about midway which can prove challenging during the rainy season. As the hiker ascends the trail to the summit of Mt. Seneca 2,106 feet, be sure to notice the abundant plant life resting at the crest. From the peak, most hiker retrace their steps through the forest.

Directions: From Junction ASP 1 & ASP 3, The Quaker Area of Allegany State Park is located at the northern edge of Allegany Reservoir off Quaker Run Road. Travel 1.4 miles east of the junction of ASP 1 and ASP 3. The trailhead is located along the northern side of the road.

This half-day loop trail offers sights of several caves and lichen-covered outcroppings.
