Bay View Trail winds and curves around the Lake Superior shoreline for 1.3 miles. Much of the trail is wooded traversing rocky soil occasionally coming within 25 yards of the lake. Sandstone formations and small bluff caves add interest to the hike.
Directions: From Bayfield, WI, Big Bay State Park is reachable via the Madeline Island Ferry Line based in Bayfield, Wisconsin. The ferry operates from "breakup" to "freeze up." Call 715-747-2051 for schedule. Winter users may drive their vehicles or snowmobiles across the lake. The ferry deposits her passengers approximately 7 miles from Big Bay State Park. Bicycles, mopeds and tour buses are popular island transporting methods. Bay View Trail begins east of the main day use parking lot.
