Trail Description

Wildlife is abundant along this self-guiding trail that winds through a sawgrass marsh. It is one of the most popular trails in the park and is named for the ever-present distinctive bird, the anhinga. Wildlife sights extend beyond the anhinga. Here you'll see alligators, turtles, herons, egrets, and many other birds, especially during the winter.

The anhingas are easy to spot. They are an upright-perching water bird ranging in length from 34" to 36". Black in color, their long slender necks extend above the freshwater surface. It is easy to understand why the bird is nicknamed "snakebird." Fascinating to watch feed, their long dagger-shaped, serrated bill catches fish then flips it into the air and gulping it down. Look for these birds congregating in thick vegetation, stretching their wings as if alarmed. As with the cormorants, they lack oil glands with which to preen, so they are actually drying their wings. This display makes for a great photograph! A third place to see these interesting water birds is circling overhead.

Directions: From Homestead, FL, Located four miles west of the main entrance station (Main Park Road) at the Royal Palm Visitor Center.

Named for the popular park species anhinga, a snake-like water bird oftentimes seen gliding just below water's surface.
