DirectionsFrom Visalia, follow State Highway 198 east for 53.5 miles, then turn right (east) where a large sign indicates Wolverton. This turnoff is about three miles northeast of Giant Forest. Turn east onto Wolverton Road and drive 1.5 miles to the large turnaround at the trailhead. Avoid the road branching right to the Wolverton Corrals, one quarter mile from the highway.
HighlightsAnyone who takes this hike has the opportunity to stand upon the alpine summit of Alta Peak and enjoy an all-encompassing vista, rivaling the best iewpoints in the Sierras. This trip surveys west slope scenery encrusted granite slabs atop Alta. The trail passes several lakes and travels along numorous creeks and rivers. Views of the Great Western Divide and the Castle Rocks can be caught. From the peak one can see Mount Whitney and the San Joaquin Valley.
