Designed by the effects of nature, this series of trail is a fine example of retreating glaciers and thousands of years of lake winds. Although Alligator Hill Trails does not afford the usual Sleeping Bear Dunes scenery of white lakeshore, the trail does offer a look at the park's interior habitats.

After winter eases and cross-country skiers cease plying over 8 miles of groomed track, the forest comes alive with sprays of springtime woodland wildflowers greeted by chirping songbirds. As summer unfolds and the trail becomes an emerald green canopy, hikers and equestrians rediscover the land by coursing along gentle ridges and ravines. The trail is a maze of green, blue and black loops, each defined by length, direction of travel, and point of interest. It is best to pick up a trail map in order to choose a route suited to your ability, desire and time frame. An important note about this trail: hunters do use this route during the fall hunting season, therefore, blaze orange should be part of your trail attire.

Directions: From Empire, MI, Travel north for 9 miles on M-109. Turn right onto Stocking Road and proceed 1 mile to trailhead found on left hand side of road. (Stocking Rd is east of D.H. Day Campground entrance.)

Originally planned as a subdivision, this beautiful trail affords sweeping climbs and downhill runs.
